Petra Phonics Intermediate Level

Target Group:
Anyone who has completed Petra Phonics Basic Level or its equivalent; Pupils must know the letter names and sounds of the alphabet and be able to write the letters using the manuscript script. They must also have had training in VC and CV structures and be good with the auditory discrimination of sounds. Their knowledge of simple phonograms would be handy.

This course is suitable for any age group. However, the minimum age of a child is 4 or 5 years.

The next available class is on Saturday from 11.00 am to 12.30 pm.

Placement Test:
A placement test will determine the child’s suitability for this course.

This course and the teachers teaching it are registered with the Ministry of Education.

Materials Used:
A wide range of Petra cards, charts, tapes, books and Petra worksheets will be used.     

Course Objectives:

Students will:

  • be active speakers as they interact with one another during Phonics activities;
  • learn how to write words using the manuscript script following the pattern on the clock face;
  • use a multi-sensory approach and a logical thinking skills approach in the learning of English phonograms;
  • have plenty of practice in reading isolated words and words in simple sentences;
  • be exposed to English literature through story time;
  • have practice reading words with the CVC and the CVC+ E structures;
  • be exposed to more sight vocabulary.

Methodology:
The lessons are taught using a multi-sensory approach and logical thinking skills approach. The lessons are interactive and fun. Each lesson is packed with a number of activities, like chanting, story time, phonemic awareness, learning with letter blocks, colouring, puppetry, reading, speaking and playing Phonics games.

Students will be introduced to books during interactive story time when the teacher will read selected stories and get the pupils to respond by asking questions or talking about what they have heard. Some sight words that occur frequently will be highlighted so that pupils start building up a sight word vocabulary.

Course Assessment:
The teacher will monitor the students and observe their progress all the time. The teacher provides feedback to the Project Coordinator after every lesson. Parents will also be informed of the progress of each child.
