Course Objectives:

Students will:

  • be fluent speakers, readers and writers of the English language appropriate to their age;
  • try to perfect their knowledge of the English phonograms so that they will be equipped with the skills to be able to spell English words more accurately in Grade 1;
  • have plenty of practice in reading a wide variety of literature with more complex Phonics sounds;
  • learn more complex Phonics skills that will equip them to be better readers and speakers;
  • have more practice in reading sight words;
  • be encouraged to write simple stories using their knowledge of the phonograms.

Methodology:
The lessons are taught using a multi-sensory approach. The lessons are interactive and fun. Each lesson is packed with a number of activities, like listening to stories, telling stories and trying to write them, playing Phonics games, reading and role play.

Students will be introduced to books during interactive story time when the teacher will read selected stories and get the pupils to respond by asking questions or talking about what they have heard. Some sight words that occur frequently will be highlighted so that pupils start building up a sight word vocabulary. Pupils will also be encouraged to do team story telling by expanding on a story line to form a story. This will establish a team spirit in children who will also learn the importance of waiting for one’s turn.

Course Assessment:
The teacher will monitor the students and observe their progress all the time. The teacher provides feedback to the Project Coordinator after every lesson. Parents will also be informed of the progress of each child.
